Aldo Bakker
Monday, January 11th, 2010
One of my favorite products of last year came from Aldo Bakker, the Dutch designer who created this beautiful collection of porcelain tableware. What makes these pieces so fascinating is that when you first see them, you might not know what they are used for – the function only becomes evident when you hold the object in your hands. As Bakker describes it’s, “a new language of form in a field where everything has been done and shown many times over.”
Marimekko Tour
Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

A few months ago I got the chance to visit the Marimekko factory in Helsinki, Finland. Here are some behind-the-scene shots of their factory and headquarters. The top image shows the production line, followed by their many, many rows of screens and a picture of their checking room. The workers were at lunch when we went through, but this is the room where each bolt of fabric is meticuously checked by hand to make sure the colors and images are all perfect! The next picture shows their awesome hallway wallpaper and a typical office – if you can’t have a window, Marimekko fabric is the next best thing. And finally, a few shots of the Marimekko holiday prints, set up in their showroom. Signing off for a few days – wishing you all very Happy Holidays!

Interesting concept for seating from TAF Arkitektkontor. Soft Parcels was an idea that came out of a need to create very simple upholstered furniture. The individual pieces can be used to build different combinations of seating.
Craft Punk: Studio Glithero
Wednesday, May 6th, 2009
Studio Glithero, a London based collective founded by Sarah van Gameren (one of my favorite young designers) and Tim Simpson, were among the participants in Fendi’s ‘Craft Punk’ exhibition. The pair used light sensitive material to transform white ceramic vases into Prussian blue pieces. Above is Studio Glithero at the Craft Punk exhibit and below is an example of their work in plate form. (photos from designboom)
